Is the LDS Church a Charity or an Investment Company?

Oct 18
4 min read

I can already see and hear the defenders rise up and defend the money the LDS Church hoards and then turn around and accuse me of not knowing what I'm talking about or not understanding why the LDS Church needs BILLIONS of dollars in its coffers for the calamities about to come...

But seriously...

Have you RESEARCHED the wealth of the The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints and how much it REALLY gives back to those in need?

Why aren't they helping those in need each year with the BILLIONS of dollars of INCREASE it receives each year?

Isn't that the purpose of the tithing it receives from its members? So at a minimum shouldn't it be paying OUT the amount of tithing it receives each year to those who are in need?

I mean, they demand 10% tithing from its members to be able to receive salvation by going to the temple (yes, it's a pay-to-be-saved scheme).

So how much does the church pay out from the "tithing" it receives from its members, not to mention the "increase" it receives from its investment funds? Because do you think the Bishop would "exempt" your interest, dividends, and capital gains from tithing if he knew it was $24 BILLION A YEAR??? I don't.

Per a Google Search today, October 12, 2026, here's what I found:

Ok, let's look at the FACTS:

  • The LDS Church receives $6-$8 BILLION every year as tithing and donations from regular every-day people, most who are probably struggling financially to make ends meet each month.

  • The LDS Church receives $24-28 BILLION every year from its investment income like: interest, dividends, capital gains etc. Do you realize that that money is just money making money? No one is "doing" anything. That money is called "passive" income, and yes, the IRS still taxes it, even though the LDS Church doesn't report it, so I'm sure the LDS Church would still tithe it.

According to the church's own "law of tithing":

  • shouldn't it give at least 10% to charity?

  • Or shouldn't it at least pay out the money it receives from its members as tithing and donations? Isn't that what the members are expecting the church to do on their behalf?

I know the church openly admits it's NOT primarily a humanitarian organization:

Elder David A. Bednar — May 26, 2022

Speaking at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

"We are not primarily a humanitarian organization."

Bednar explained that the Church's central purpose is preparing people for the Second Coming of Jesus Christ, rather than functioning principally as a humanitarian organization.

But shouldn't it be abiding by its own "law of tithing" so its not a hypocrite?

And I'd love to ask Bednar why the church needs over $300 BILLION to prepare people for the 2nd coming of Jesus Christ. Isn't baptism, teaching others about Jesus, and doing the works that Jesus commanded us to do: casting out demons, laying hands on the sick, speaking in new tongues, etc. FREE?? I don't recall Jesus telling us it will cost BILLIONS of dollars to prepare people for the Kingdom of God.

Ok, let's just hold the LDS Church to its own standard and "law of tithing" of paying out 10% to those in need instead of stating the obvious that it SHOULD be paying out the $6-$8 BILLION it received from its members as good stewards of its member's tithes and offerings...

And I'll be conservative and use the lower number of only $30B instead of $36B as increase.

The calculation would be:

$30,000,000,000 x 10% = $3,000,000,000 or $3B

But wait...

The LDS church's own report states that it paid out $1.58B "on global humanitarian aid, welfare support, and self-reliance programs."

WHAT PERCENTAGE IS THAT?

$1.58B/$30B = 5.2%

Hmmmmm....

so the LDS church makes $30-$36 BILLION each year and only pays out 5.2% of it to help those in need.

Are you ok with that???

Do you think Jesus is ok with that percentage????

I don't.

I think Jesus would have A LOT to say to that church and how it steals from its members and hoards it all to itself when its members give it at least $6 BILLION to help the needy and it only pays out $1.58 BILLION or 26% of it.

I think Jesus would say the same thing to these church leaders as He said to the religious leaders of His day:

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you tithe mint and dill and cumin, and have neglected the weightier provisions of the Law: justice and mercy and faithfulness; but these are the things you should have done without neglecting the others. You blind guides, who strain out a gnat and swallow a camel!"

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you clean the outside of the cup and of the dish, but inside they are full of robbery and self-indulgence. You blind Pharisee, first clean the inside of the cup and of the dish, so that the outside of it may also become clean."

“Woe to you, scribes and Pharisees, hypocrites! For you are like whitewashed tombs which on the outside appear beautiful, but inside they are full of dead men’s bones and all uncleanness. So you too, outwardly appear righteous to people, but inwardly you are full of hypocrisy and lawlessness."

OUCH.

Jesus sure had a way with words and was not afraid to confront the evil of the religious leaders!! I just love Him!

I don't think anything has changed in religion since Jesus' day, especially in the LDS Church...

Except that its only gotten worse...
